Learn the Thai Alphabet

This isn't another Thai alphabet chart. You can already find a hundred of those. This page fills the one gap they all leave open: learning to recite the alphabet, from ก to ฮ, in order.

Meet all 44 Thai consonants with their royal transliteration and key words, then hear a native Thai speaker say them, with three utilities built to get the alphabet into your head, in order.

Here's the thing. We're confident that the Read Thai Easily app is the best and quickest way to learn to read Thai. Clever picture mnemonics make every character stick, so you can be reading real Thai words in as little as two weeks.

But reading isn't the whole story. We know where learners get stuck: the order of the Thai alphabet. Know it by heart, like your ABCs, and a Thai dictionary opens up to you. You'll know roughly where to look for any word, and you'll find your way around any alphabetical list too.

The 44 Thai consonants with romanisation

Thai writing has 44 consonant letters. Each one is traditionally learnt together with a key word that starts with its sound, like "ko kai" for ก ไก่, the chicken. Two of them, ฃ and ฅ, have fallen out of use, but you'll still find them in the alphabet.

The romanisation below is the Royal Thai General System (RTGS), the official system used on road signs and in government documents. It spells the letter's name followed by its key word, and doesn't mark tones.
